English Translation and Meaning
Verses 1–7: The Divine Names The hymn begins by listing the glorious names of the Lord: Venkatesha, Vasudeva, Pradyumna, the one of immeasurable valor, Sankarshana, and Aniruddha. He is the Lord of the Sheshadri hills, Janardana, the lotus-navelled Padmanabha, and the dweller of Venkatachala. He is the creator, the Lord of the universe, Madhava, who is dearly affectionate to His devotees. He is Govinda, Krishna, Kesava, the one with the Eagle (Garuda) flag, the Boar (Varaha), the Dwarf (Vamana), Narayana, and the one beyond sensory perception. He is the bearer of Lakshmi, the lotus-eyed one, the Hari praised by all gods, Narasimha, the ancient thread-weaver of the universe, the Lord of Ramaa, the sustainer of the Earth, and the Supreme Being (Purushottama). He is the giver of boons to Brahma and others, the treasure of Shri, the destroyer of fear for all beings, Rama, and the one who liberates us from the bonds of worldly existence.
Verses 8–9: The Supremacy of the Lord He is the sole refuge of all gods, the supreme deity, the protective armor of all divinities, and the crest jewel among all gods. Whoever chants these names of the infinitely radiant Vishnu three times a day (dawn, noon, and dusk) will be cleansed of all sins.
Verses 10–13: The Fruits of Devotion (Phalashruti) Whether at the gates of a king, in the middle of a terrible battle, or when surrounded by enemies, one who recites this need never fear ghosts, serpents, or demons. The childless shall be blessed with children, the poor shall find wealth, the sick shall be cured of disease, and the bound shall find freedom. Whatever one desires in this world will undoubtedly be attained—including prosperity, royal honors, devotion, and ultimate liberation. This hymn is a ladder to the world of Vishnu, the destroyer of all sorrows, and the bringer of all auspiciousness to humanity.
Verses 14–16: The Abode and Salutation The Lord, the master of illusion and supreme bliss, left his highest abode in Vaikuntha to enjoy the company of Goddess Lakshmi on the banks of the Swami Pushkarini pond. I bow to Lord Venkatesha, to Srinivasa, whose form is wonderful and auspicious, and who grants all desired objects. There is no place in the entire universe equal to Venkatadri, and there is no deity equal to Lord Venkatesha—neither in the past nor in the future. By this truthful declaration, may all my goals be accomplished.
